Blank to Blessing
Karnataka & Telangana
Background
Each academic year, nearly 100 crores of unused notebook sheets go to waste in Bengaluru alone — an equivalent of 472 tonnes of paper and approximately 8,000 trees sacrificed to produce them. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for responsible consumption and recycling practices among students and institutions.
Motivated by this concern, a group of Whitefield school children decided to act. They launched the “Blank to Blessing” initiative — a summer holiday project run by children, for children — with a simple yet powerful mission: to collect unused notebook pages, papers, and stationery from students in urban schools and recycle or repurpose them for rural government school children.
Recognizing the alignment with its sustainability vision, Sumadhura Foundation extended its full support to this inspiring community-driven effort. The Foundation guided and facilitated the campaign through its CSR & Sustainability team, helping amplify impact and awareness.
Project Objectives
- Create awareness about responsible paper use and reducing waste.
Encourage recycling and reuse of notebooks, stationery, and school supplies.
Promote environmental conservation by reducing tree cutting for new paper production.
Support education equity by providing recycled notebooks to underprivileged children.
CSR Objective – Environment Focus - This initiative reflects Sumadhura’s Environmental CSR Goals, which emphasise:
i. Programs aimed at reducing waste generation at the community level.
ii. Promotion of recycling, upcycling, and circular usage of resources to minimize environmental footprint. - By supporting the Blank to Blessing project, Sumadhura Foundation reinforces the message that “small changes can make a big difference” when it comes to sustainability.
Project Overview
-
The Blank to Blessing initiative encourages students to donate partially used notebooks, blank sheets, and unused stationery. These are collected, sorted, rebound, and distributed to children studying in rural government schools — turning what would have been waste into a blessing of learning.
-
Implemented by the Whitefield community children with support from Sumadhura Foundation, this project represents a unique collaboration between youth and corporate CSR, fostering environmental stewardship and empathy from a young age.
-
The initiative also included awareness sessions within schools and residential communities on:
-
The impact of paper waste on the environment
-
The importance of recycling and mindful consumption
-
How small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful change
